ABOUT THE ALBUM
"Across a Crowded Room"
I often have songs in my head while traveling through New York City. Most of the arrangements on this CD were conceived on the Q train on my way in from Brooklyn to visit Anne Phillips on the West Side. I think of "Hum Drum Blues," done with just voice and the hand drums, as the thoughts in my head while making the transfer from the Q to the 2/3 train at Times Square. There’s always a thriving stimulus of people on my journey to make the connecting train. I move steadily through the underground pathways fueled by a somewhat cyclical stream of conciousness, not unlike like the pattern of the "Hum Drum Blues."
"Some Enchanted Evening" mimics the thrill and urgency of finding that special someone "across a crowded room." I felt that a jazz waltz tempo coming out of rubato would be the perfect example of the feeling of that thrill. It was a dream come true to hear this arrangement played by some of the very best musicians in town. Adam Asarnow gives a breathtaking solo which I’ll never get out of my head! I must be sure to thank Anne Phillips and Bob Kindred for their steadfast love and support. I couldn’t have done this without you! Also, thanks to my amazing family and friends for your interest in this passion of mine.
